Hole In My life Pgs 1-40

As the book starts, it begins with a picture of a prisoner and the picture is of the narrator. The prisoner is Jack Gantos. He in the medium-security federal prison in Ashland, Kentucky. Jack then begins to explain the prison life and social hierarchy that is implanted into the federal prison system. The "system" is based off fear and how effectively you can instill it. He then describez how he got into jail and the story begins with him as a teenager with his family. As a teenager, his father would take him around the new towns that the family would move to because of the father's job, and his dad would spot all the convicts that have been released. His father had a very special talent for spotting ex-felons. As he matured and grew up, his father's affinity for taking new jobs along the gulf coast area led his family to San Juan, Puerto Rico. While his family moved, they thought it was the best for him to stay in Florida to finish out his senior year of school. Jack then rented out a room in the Bacon Family's house. They sold prostetics to elderly people and didnt mind having Jack stay for rent because they needed money. But, then Jack began to drink too much and one night vomitted all over the living room of the Bacon's and then they kicked him out. With no where to go, Jack ended up at the King's Court which was a run down motel. He still attended high school for the year but that year he spent at the former prison turned high school was momumental to his life, this is the year he first tried pot and began to fufill his dream of becoming a writer. As the year came to the end, he decided to apply to the University of Florida at Gainesville. With the weight of college too much, he decided to take a new path and wing it because he knew college wasnt going to be sufficient.

The main character in this book seems to be very deep and complex. The amount of maturity he shows and the independence he is awarded is high. As a teenager Jack was already self-sufficient and could provide for himself with rent for a room, food and basic necessities. This shows alot about his personality. The life he lives seems too good to be true though. As a young adult he always seems to have enough money to get through and blow it on anything. I want to know how he did it because he had a job but that was at the local grocery store and that is not sufficient to support him. But other then that, his life seems to be great. I would love to be able to live on my own by now and know that I would have enough money and car.
